I happen to have a lot of expertise in this area and I want to share some common misconceptions.
If you have visible mold in your house, the most important thing is to physically remove it rather than trying to kill it. If it is on a hard, non-porous surface, it can usually be cleaned off with water and a detergent. According to the EPA, biocides such as bleach are not needed. Remember, the goal is to physically remove it, not to kill it.
If it is growing through a soft, porous surface such as a fabric or drywall, typically the material will need to be replaced.
Whether you remediate the mold yourself or you hire a professional is dependent on the extent of the growth. If you do hire a professional, find someone who has a certification from the American IAQ Council (www.iaqcouncil.org) or the IICRC (www.iicrc.org).
Remember that mold spores are everywhere outdoors and indoors. You want to stop any moisture problems that cause those spores to grow and cause greater problems.
