Greetings,
I just came across this site yesterday and think it is great!
I wanted to share some other sites that you all might find helpful.

[www.greenhotels-directory.com] - Launched late last year and has a booking engine. It is hard to tell that these hotels are green though. There is no clear rating system.

[greenhotelbookings.com] -This another site that allows customers to book on the website and has a rating system that is very clear.

[www.energystar.gov] - Search Energy Star Certified Hotels.

[www.environmentallyfriendlyhotels.com] - This directory has a nice simple rating system but the definitions are vague based upon a certain amount of green attributes. Go to advanced search to see what those attributes are.

[www.istaygreen.org] - A nicely designed site with a booking engine. It shows green hotels and non-green, letting you compare pricing and see the green rating of the hotel. There is a check box if all you want to see are the green hotels. Hotels complete the self audit online to be certified.

When it comes to finding a green hotel or vacation, it can be very confusing. As a travel agent I rely on accredited programs like Green Globe Certification and other accredited third party verifiers. Also, many states are taking these rating systems into their own hands. Check out each states tourism website because most likely they also have a green hotel directory.
Hope this was helpful.
Happy travels :)

Wind power is the fastest growing energy source in the world. Even though the electricity production using wind energy is only 1% of the worldwide electricity use, Investments in Wind Energy is growing rapidly. The energy produced from wind is increasing more than fivefold globally between 2000 and 2007.

The wind energy production is expected to increase more than 21% per year. The industry has been growing at 28% a year for the past five years, and if growth trends continue at this pace as is expected, wind capacity will double about every three or four years.

In wind turbines, the wind flows over the airfoil shaped blades of the turbine causing them to turn. The blades are connected to a drive shaft that turns an electric generator to produce electricity. Turbines used in wind farms for commercial production of electric power are usually three-bladed and pointed into the wind by computer-controlled motors. Many new technologies have come up that have decreased the cost of producing electricity from wind manifold.

So we all know that a major factor of climate change is the amount of CO2 that is being emitted into the atmosphere everyday right? Obvious sources of these mass CO2 emissions come from our cars, buses, planes etc. You may be thinking about how to make your trips "greener." Riding bikes for short distances, or HEY be adventurous and ride them for long distances too; carpool; clean energy sources for public transit, etc. will reduce the amount of vehicle traffic.

An interesting site I came across allows you to calculate the amount of CO2 emissions in your flight plans. I chose my departure from Chicago, IL, with my destination being Puerto Rico...and the amount of CO2 emissions would be 741 kg and the total warming affect would be 2222 kg. The site also gives you an interpretation of what all this means for people who need a practical example...like myself =)
Enjoy!

I read something today that got me thinking - a debate in Congress over to either a.) establish tougher OSHA penalties, or b.) advance programs for injury prevention. (See Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass. vs. Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo comments recently). Like I said, it got me thinking. One side of the arguement was saying increasing penalties will help reduce workplace deaths; another was saying that prevention of workplace injuries rather than just punishments should be discussed. I realize this site is about being Green and what we do to be Green and some might argue that this isn't the place for this discussion, but in my mind part of going Green in the first place is safety and health. So, having said all of that (whew!), I would like to hear what everyone out there does or sees done at work to reduce injuries, promote better health and safety, and things they would like to see changed (maybe both at work and in government). Anyone?

Allergies can come from exposure to a number of possible sources (animal dander, latex, dust, pollen, perfumes, and insects for example). The EPA states that there are three stages of reducing indoor air pollution: 1) control the source of pollution; 2) ventilating adequately; and, 3) cleaning indoor air. I can tell you, having allergies myself, that taking proactive measures both through allergy testing (with my doctor in order to understand some specifics) and regular cleaning and maintenance at home have helped me control some of the symptoms that I had experienced before - things like: regularly HEPA vacuuming my home's contents and building components, reducing the cleaning products that I'm allergic to, and keeping a clean MERV 14 filter in my HVAC system (read Ian's post on HVAC filters) - oh yes, I moved the cats out (they have good homes; don't get too mad at me - lol).

I'd be interested to hear from people regarding ways they've tried to control allergens in their home or offices. I've studied it and have personal experience, having allergies, but I thought I'd try to open something up here. I can share a couple of resources that I've read that I've found interesting: the Institute of Medicine has a report called Clearing the Air: Asthma and Indoor Air Exposures (thanks for that tip Ian - I got that from your course - plug, plug) which can be viewed at [aspe.hhs.gov]; and then there is the Asthma and Allergy Foundation website at [www.aafa.org].

Don't get discouraged if you have a older system or a system that won't support the filter you want. If your system needs adjustment to accomodate the filter you want you can get that done. The only caution I'd give you is this: don't rely only on a filter to clean the air in your home. The sources of indoor air pollution are many, with the HVAC system being but one potential source (and the filter but one aid toward a solution). Routine maintenance should be a plan for the entire building and its systems. Then, the filter and system you install will work in concert with the other proactive measures you're taking to keep the air in your home clean.

A lot of media has been floating around out there regarding 'toxic' black mold. I thought I'd make a small post to let people know that not all mold is 'toxic', and the ones that produce toxins require a few things in order for there to be toxin production. Production of the toxins depends on a few factors, such as temperature and pH. If someone is concerned about toxins associated with mold in their home or office they should look to a professional to help consult them through the process, someone that has no ties to remediation (so there is no conflict of interest). The Indoor Air Quality Association (www.iaqa.org) and American Indoor Air Quality Council (AmIAQ) (www.iaqcouncil.org) have great resource materials on professionals so you can find someone qualified in your area to help.

"If the restaurant industry can dial down the enormous environmental damage it does daily even slightly, it would be huge. Restaurants are the retail world's largest energy user. They use almost five times more energy per square foot than any other type of commercial building, says Pacific Gas & Electric's Food Service Technology Center (FSTC)."

"Nearly 80% of the $10 billion dollars that the commercial food service sector spends annually for its energy use is lost in inefficient food cooking, holding and storage, says PG&E's tech division."

"The average restaurant annually consumes roughly 500,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, 20,000 therms of natural gas and 800,000 gallons of water. Using the latest EPA carbon equivalents, that amounts to 490 tons of carbon dioxide produced per year per restaurant, PG&E estimates."

"Then there's all that trash. Restaurants produce far more garbage on a daily basis than most other retail businesses. A typical restaurant generates 100,000 pounds of garbage per location per year, the Green Restaurant Association estimates."

Almost everything that comes from a restaurant can be recylced or composted.

Some companies have turned green by using hybrid cars for their deliveries, turning hamburger grease into bio diesel fuel, using less paper wrapping, reintroducing the paper straw, and constructing green buildings.

Critics wonder whether this proposed migration into the "green" economy is monetarily benficial for restaurants...what do you think?

"The USDA estimates that within the next ten years over half of all Americas farm products will come from only 1% of the farms. The EPA also states that commercial agriculture is accountable for 70% of the pollution in our country's rivers and streams. Small scale organic farmers finance innovative and far reaching research designed to reduce agricultures impact on the environment."

Is there anything we can do to stop the presumed depletion of America's farm products? Can the percentage of people who actually endorse the organic products make an impact on commercial distributions by boycotting those products etc.?
A friend of mine, Dave Munn, shared a great website with me yesterday. North Carolina State's Solar Center maintains a comprehensive database of US incentives on a federal, state and local level.
You can click on your state to see what is available in your area. To visit the website, click [www.dsireusa.org].

This is really an important message to get out. The other day I was in a person's home that had an ozone generating "air purification device" running during a water incursion. The air was heavy and visibly contaminated. One of the occupants complained of aggrevated asthmatic symptoms. Its no wonder.

If anyone out there is reading these posts, make sure you take the time to get all of the information. The US Environmental Protection Agency has some great resource materials for anyone looking into this topic. I believe in the other post there is a link to one of their resource materials; here is another: www.epa.gov/03healthtraining. This link will take you into a course style review of the source and formation of ozone, effects of exposure, and it addresses typical patient questions and clinical scenarios in relation to ozone exposure. Some of the information is a little doctor-ish or consultant-ish, but it really does provide some very interesting information on this topic.
